Mauritania comprises five (5) Main Geological Units:
- The Rgueibat Shield with Achaean and Birimian formations;
- The Mauritanides Belt with metamorphic volcanic & sedimentary formations ;
- The Coastal Basin with Paleozoic to Cenozoic formations.
- The Taoudenni Basin with Upper Proterozoic to Paleozoic depositional systems.
- The Tindouf Sedimentary Basin
